About Abhijit

Over the past 11 years at McKinsey, Abhijit has worked with large mining and steel companies in Africa, Australia, and India, helping them improve their performance trajectory. An industry veteran, he has visited over 100 mines globally and has also worked closely with industry associations and ministries to shape India’s mining and steel policy. Abhijit is currently focused on crafting a relevant digital and analytics strategy for companies in this sector.

Some of his recent work includes engineering the large-scale transformation of an integrated natural resources company to successfully transition from open cast to fully underground mining, which focused on mine design, development, maintenance, and services, to achieve more 100 percent improvement in throughput within 2 years. Abhijit also crafted governance strategy for an integrated steel company to double its capacity within next 5 to 7 years. He has also shaped turnaround strategy for a distressed coal mining asset in Australia, and has helped an integrated zinc miner with a comprehensive external spend reduction program focusing on alternate sourcing, consumption rationalization, contract renegotiation, and logistics. This resulted in savings of $100 million over a spend base of $500 million in a span of 15 months.

Abhijit led a mining and processing overall equipment effectiveness (OEE) improvement program for an iron-ore major, involving in-land logistics optimization and maintenance excellence, which led to a threefold increase in output at 40 percent higher margins. He has also undertaken a greenfield coal-mine optimization program, including equipment configuration, OEE improvement, maintenance and rail and port capital optimization, resulting in savings of $10 per ton in free on board cost.
